This week in Backyard Getaways, we hit the trails at the Elm Creek Park Reserve. The park is close and has plenty of biking options.
“It’s really cool,” said Clay Chapiewski of Elk River. “You’re in the woods and you can’t tell that you’re in a busy area.”
Elm Creek is located in the Northwest burbs, but it has the look and feel of Bemidji or Brainerd.
“It feels like you are in a state park up north,” said Jake Northrup of Brooklyn Park. “It doesn’t feel like you are right in town.”
Biking hub
Elm Creek Park Reserve is a biking hub with 20 miles of paved trails and connecting spokes to other main cycling routes. Pedal power can take you past colorful wildflowers, under tree canopies and next to scenic lakes.
“The Elm Creek trailed area for road biking is just beautiful,” said Rebecca Northrup. “Just last week I was on a trail and a deer was standing in the middle of the trail just looking at me.”
Biking at Elm Creek is win-win. Cyclists get to be outdoors and also get some good exercise.
“It’s great for a good workout,” said Rebecca Northrup. “If you’re looking to get some great cardio with ups and downs and working your core it’s really good for that.”
Of course if you need a break there are rest stops along the way. Benches and picnic tables are located throughout Elm Creek.
If you need a break from the paved trails, cyclists can hop on the dirt and do some serious mountain biking. These single-track trails are full of obstacles and challenges.
Elm Creek’s trail system connects to city trails in Champlin, Dayton and Maple Grove, as well as the Rush Creek and Medicine Lake Regional trails.
